Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging, also called sonography, is a noninvasive medical exam that uses sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of your body. Ultrasound does not use radiation and is generally painless. Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of internal organs, as well as blood flowing through the vessels.

The Day of Your Ultrasound Exam and How to Prepare

Prior to your exam, our staff will inform you of any preparation instructions and your appointment check-in time. The exam preparation will depend on the type of exam you are having. You may be asked to follow a special diet, drink a specific quantity or water or other instructions. It is important to check the preparation requirements and follow the instructions for your ultrasound procedure.

You should wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing for your exam. Depending on what part of your body is being scanned, you may be asked to change into a gown.

For most ultrasound exams, you will be positioned on an exam table, likely on your back. The sonographer will apply a warm, water-based gel to the area being studied. The gel reduces the chance of air pockets blocking sound waves created by the transducer. There is usually no discomfort, however, if scanning is performed over an area of tenderness, you may feel pressure or minor discomfort.

Your Ultrasound Results

A board-certified radiologist will interpret images from your ultrasound exam. A final report will be completed within 3 business days and sent to your referring health care provider who will then explain the results and answer any follow-up questions you may have.
